What is the current (2026) HST rate in Nova Scotia?

The current HST rate in Nova Scotia is 14%. It consists of the 5% federal portion and the 9% provincial portion. Nova Scotia reduced its HST rate from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025.

Nova Scotia HST calculation example

For a price of $100 before tax:

  • Federal portion: $100 × 5% = $5
  • Provincial portion: $100 × 9% = $9
  • Total HST: $14
  • Price including HST: $114

For a reverse calculation, divide the tax-inclusive price by 1.14. For example, $114 ÷ 1.14 = $100 before HST.

History of HST in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia introduced the Harmonized Sales Tax on April 1, 1997, replacing the previous combination of federal GST and provincial sales tax with a single harmonized tax. The rate was 15% from July 1, 2010, through March 31, 2025, before decreasing to 14% on April 1, 2025.
